UTAH STATE REPRESENTATIVE CHRIS HERROD ANNOUNCES RUN FOR U.S. SENATE
SALT LAKE CITY—January 6, 2012—Utah State Rep. Chris Herrod will today announce his candidacy for the U.S. Senate at the Utah State Capitol Boardroom at noon today. For more information visit his website at: www.Herrod2012.com
A proven conservative, Rep. Herrod brings fresh energy and a sense of urgency to Republican efforts to advance conservative values and gain an important foothold in the current debate over the direction our country will take. Herrod is an ardent defender of state sovereignty and a relentless promoter of principles espoused in the U.S. Constitution.
“I am running because I believe this a critical time for our nation,” said Herrod. “We don’t have much time to fix our challenges. Our only chance to avoid extreme economic hardship is to quickly return to the principles upon which this nation was founded.
“Our escalating debt has become a national security issue,” he continued. “So has our dependence on foreign oil. By carefully developing our state’s natural resources, Utahns can help reduce these threats.”
Rep. Herrod grew up in Utah, but offers a wealth of international experience. He taught free market business principles in the former Soviet Union. While there, Herrod met his wife, who grew up in the Soviet Union and experienced firsthand the horrors of socialism and communism. He believes socialism robs individuals of their full potential, weakens the family and, eventually, bankrupts a society both morally and financially.
The Patrick Henry Caucus, which Herrod co-founded, was instrumental in passing legislation that challenges Obamacare, which will be addressed by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2012.
“Not only must we cut spending, but we must quickly grow our economy,” said Herrod. “By repealing Obamacare and thwarting federal government creep, developing our own natural resources, and reducing general federal government spending, I am confident the United States can regain ground as an economic leader of freedom.”
Rep. Herrod plans to remain in the Utah Legislature during the 2012 Session due to important legislation pending that he believes is vital to the State of Utah and his constituents. The bill deals with state sovereignty and public lands, both of which hold the key to Utah’s economic recovery as well as educational funding.
Rep. Herrod received the Legislator of Year Award in 2011 from the Utah Association of Public Charter Schools. He also received the Guardian of Small Business Award from the National Federation of Independent Businesses.
Rep. Herrod is a graduate of Brigham Young University with a double major in International Relations and Family Living; he also earned a Master’s Degree in Organizational Behavior.
Rep. Herrod is highly approachable, known for his smile and easy-going manner. However, he is also a knowledgeable and competitive lawmaker. In 2007, he was ranked #1 in the U.S. for Veteran Epee Fencing; he was the only person in the nation to garner medals in all three weapons for two years in a row.
